EASTON, Mass. (July 31, 2024) – Stonehill College men's tennis freshman Guillermo Bennaton competed as a member of his home nation of Honduras' team that prevailed victorious as one of the top two teams in Group IV of the Davis Cup, defeating Cuba by a final score of 2-1 this past weekend.

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis, run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It's contested annually between teams from over 150 competing countries, making it the world's largest annual team sporting competition. The format consists of various groups ranging from continental zones, with the top two teams from each zone earning the promotion to the next highest-level group.

During the Group IV Americas Zone of the Davis Cup from July 22-27, Honduras posted an overall record of 3-1, with its lone loss coming against Aruba, 1-2, on July 26. After the Aruba loss, Honduras bounced back in the Group IV Play-Off, earning a 2-1 victory over Cuba and the promotion to Group III.  Individually, Bennaton registered a mark of 1-1, earning his victory against Haiti's No. 1 position singles player on July 24, 6-2, 6-1.

The San Pedro Sula native debuted with the Honduras national team at the Davis Cup in 2023. He compiled a record of 1-2 throughout singles and doubles competition, highlighted by a thrilling three-set doubles victory against Costa Rica. Alongside his fellow teammate, the pairing took down the Costa Rica duo, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, in group III, earning his first Davis Cup win.

Bennaton, a four-time Academic Honor Roll recipient in high school, joins a Stonehill roster that earned its third ITA All-Academic Team honors, first as an NCAA Division I program last season. The Skyhawks also finished the year with a 7-15 overall record, highlighted by a pair of milestone wins that included posting their first-ever win against an NEC opponent on Saturday, February 24, over Wagner, before securing the program's first NEC Tournament win against the Seahawks in comeback fashion on Friday, April 12.

The Stonehill College men's tennis team opens its 2024 Fall campaign with the Skyhawks Doubles Invitational, hosting Wheaton College, Roger Williams, and Merrimack at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts on Saturday, September 7.
