Stonehill Singles Out Colby-Sawyer, 6-3
Skyhawks win five of six
singles matches to erase 2-1 doubles deficit
EASTON,
Mass. (October 1, 2009) - Stonehill College dropped two of
three doubles matches, but fought back to win five of six in
singles play and post a 6-3 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in
non-conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Courts this
evening.
Senior Mike Leone
(Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and freshman Chris Martin
(Darien, Conn./Darien) led Stonehill to victory as
double-winners on the day. The two combined to claim the Skyhawks
lone doubles point with an 8-1 triumph at No. 2. Leone then cruised
to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Martin rolled to a 6-1,
6-1 triumph at No. 3.
Senior Michael Mashkevich
(Goleta, Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) posted a 6-3, 6-3 win
at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Jonathan Burke
(Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) posted a 6-1, 6-1
victory at No. 4 and classmate Aaron Bergeron (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) picked up a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 decision at No. 5
to cap the Stonehill rally.
Sophomore Chris Lavoie
(Gorham, Maine/Cheverus) claimed Colby-Sawyer's lone
singles point with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6. The Chargers also
claimed wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to carry an early 2-1 advantage
in the dual match.
Stonehill (2-1, 1-0 NE-10) closes
out its fall season when it hosts the Stonehill Invitational on
Saturday and Sunday at Watt Courts. Colby-Sawyer (0-1, 0-0 CCC)
hosts the University of Southern Maine on Sunday, October 11, at
10:30 a.m.
