Skyhawks Tie for 2nd at Stonehill Invitational
Burke reaches final for
4th-flight singles, Bergeron/Cusimano doubles
finalists

Mass. (October 5, 2009) - The Stonehill College men's
tennis team finished among three teams tied for second at its
Stonehill Invitational held Saturday and Sunday. The Skyhawks
finished with 14 points, with two finalists at the flighted event.
Merrimack College won the team title
with 20 points, while Stonehill, Connecticut College and The
College of the Holy Cross all tied for second with 14. Nichols
College (12 pts), Salve Regina University (8), Bridgewater State
College (2) and Curry College (1) rounded out the eight-team field.
Stonehill sophomore Jonathan
Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) and the Skyhawks
doubles team of sophomores Aaron Bergeron (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) and Chris Cusimano (Jamestown,
N.Y./Southwestern) reached the finals of their events.
Burke fell to Merrimack's Liam Hoare in a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 battle in
the No. 4-flight singles final. Bergeron and Cusimano were handed
an 8-0 setback to Chad Strong and Zack Rosenfeld of Salve Regina in
the doubles final.
Matt Wierzer from Holy Cross won the
top-flight singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over George King of
Connecticut College. Justin DeLuca of Nichols won the No. 2 singles
final with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Petar Golijanin of Merrimack,
while Merrimack's Sean Pahller topped Colin Tasi from Connecticut
College in the No. 3 singles final, 6-1, 6-2.
This weekend's event closed out the
fall season for Stonehill (2-1, 1-0 NE-10) who will continue their
drive for a second-straight Northeast-10 Conference championship in
the spring. The Skyhawks have won 15-straight NE-10 regular season
dual matches entering the spring season.
