Roger Williams Tops Stonehill, 7-2

BRISTOL, R.I (September 16, 2009) - Roger Williams College posted a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference men's tennis matchup on Tuesday night.

Freshman Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) led three double-winners for Roger Williams as he notched a 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 2 singles after teaming up with classmate Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) for an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Withington was also a double-winner for the Hawks, notching a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision at No. 4 singles. The Hawks swept the three doubles matches.

Senior Michael Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and freshman Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) earned points for Stonehill. Mashkevich, a first team All-Northeast-10 performer at No. 2 singles last season, swept to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles last night. Martin posted a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles in his collegiate debut.         

Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action this weekend when it participates in the Wilson-ITA East Regionals, hosted by Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, on Friday through Sunday. Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CCC) hosts Babson University on Wednesday, September 23, at 3:30 p.m.
