Stonehill Wilson-ITA East Regional Day One Update
Leone reaches Round of 16 to highlight Skyhawks day one
effort
Senior Michael Leone advanced to the round of 16 in singles
play for Stonehill on Friday.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.
(September 19, 2009) - The Stonehill College men's tennis
team enjoyed a good day one of the 2009 Wilson-ITA Division II East
Regionals, hosted by Chestnut Hill College and Philadelphia
University, on Friday.
Senior Mike Leone
(Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) led the Stonehill contingent by
winning his opening round match over Philadelphia's Eric Guerrero,
6-1, 6-3, to reach Saturday's round of 16. Leone will square
off against top-seeded Viktor Kim of Dominican College in his next
match. Classmate Michael Mashkevich (Goleta,
Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) was eliminated by second-seeded
Lorenzo Cava, from Bentley University, in his opening round match,
6-0, 6-0.
Mashkevich and sophomore
Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown)
posted an 8-2 victory in their opening round doubles matchup with
Chestnut Hill's Pat Joson and Joe Boyle. The Skyhawks were then
defeated by Philadelphia's Adrian Torreola-Cruz and Kyle Burke in
the quarterfinals, 8-2.
Stonehill also placed three players
in the round of 16 in the "B" draw. Senior Charlie Sherman
(Amston, Conn./RHAM) opened with an 8-3 win over
Merrimack's Jonathan Ravenelle, before cruising to an 8-0 triumph
over Dominican's Mike Sinclair in the second round. Sherman will
face Bloomsburg's Matt Chase in the round of 16.
Burke reached the round of 16 with
one victory after receiving a first round bye. He topped Le Moyne
College's Jim Shelp, 8-3, and will now face University of Sciences'
Chris Lukose.
Sophomore Aaron Bergeron
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) will open play in the round of 16
after earning a bye through the first two rounds and will face Liam
Hoare from Merrimack on Saturday. Freshman Chris Martin
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was eliminated by Joe Persia of Le
Moyne in the second round when he retired down 5-2.
In "B" flight doubles, Leone and
Sherman are in the quarters after edging Ryan Christopher and Eric
Guerrero of Philadelphia in the round of 16. Martin and Bergeron
were eliminated by Daniel Sullivan and Brian Rice, 9-7, in the
second round after receiving a first round bye.
Play continues at the regional
through Saturday, before concluding on Sunday.
