PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 21, 2009)
- Stonehill College seniors Michael Leone
(Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and Charlie Sherman
(Amston, Conn./RHAM) saw their bid for the men's "B" draw
doubles title fall just short in the championship round on Sunday.
Leone and Sherman were edged by
Temur Nanikashvili and Jesse Smith from Queens College, 9-7, in the
final. The Stonehill doubles pairing reached the championship match
with an 8-6 victory over Eduardo Ribeiro and Michael Sinclair of
Dowling College in the semifinals. They defeated Robby Scheuing and
Taylor Crabill of Queens in the quarters.
Sophomore Jonathan Burke
(Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) reached the semifinals
of the "B" singles draw before being edged by eventual bracket
winner Nanikashvili of Queens, 8-4. Burke topped Bentley University
sophomore Victor Suski in the quarterfinals, 8-6, and Chris Lukose
from the University of Sciences, 8-0, in the round of 16.
Sherman fell to Matt Chase of
Bentley in the round of 16, 8-3, while Stonehill sophomore
Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was edged by
Merrimack's Liam Hoare, 8-5, in the round of 16.
Leone was defeated in the round of
16 in the "A" singles draw by top-seeded Alex Grubin of Concordia
College, 6-0, 6-0.
Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) returns
to team play this Saturday, September 26, when it opens defense of
its Northeast-10 Conference championship at Franklin Pierce
University at 1 p.m.
