Coast Guard Grinds Out Win Over
Stonehill, 6-3
Bears win top two doubles
and top four singles in dual match which features
five tie-breaks, including all three doubles matches
EASTON,
Mass. (February 28, 2010) - The United States Coast Guard
Academy grinded out a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College in
non-conference men's tennis action at the Sally Blair Ames Sports
Complex on Saturday night.
In a dual match that lasted nearly
five hours, USCGA won two of the three doubles matches, all of
which went to tie-breakers, and won the top four singles pairings
to come away with the victory. Senior captain Chris Pappe
(Kenosha, Wis.), sophomores Greg Mitchell (Keene,
N.H.) and Nick Martin (State College,
Pa.) and freshman Blake Maurer (Fort Worth,
Texas) were all double-winners for the Bears.
Pappe and Mitchell combined for a
9-8 (7-4) win at No. 1 doubles, while Mitchell went on to claim a
6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of
the Year Tim Fayed (Glastonbury,
Conn./Glastonbury) at first singles. Pappe also posted a
6-3, 0-6, 6-3 decision at third singles. Martin and Maurer combined
for a 9-8 (8-6) win at No. 2 doubles before Martin was victorious
at No. 2 singles and Maurer picked up a three-set win at fourth
singles.
Sophomore Aaron Bergeron
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Chris Martin
(Darien, Conn./Darien) were both double-winners for
Stonehill. The duo combined for a 9-8 (9-7) victory at third
doubles, before Martin posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at fifth singles and
Bergeron won a 6-3, 6-0 decision at sixth singles.
Stonehill (2-2, 1-0 NE-10) is back
in action on Sunday, March 7, when it opens its annual spring break
trip to Hilton Head, S.C., against Catawba College at 6 p.m. Coast
Guard (4-4, 0-0 NEWMAC) returns to action Thursday, March 18, when
it hosts Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 p.m.
