Stonehill Edges Salve

NEWPORT, R.I. (March 19,
2010) – Stonehill College edged Salve Regina
University, 5-4, in non-conference men's tennis action at
Leroy Avenue Courts this afternoon.
Senior Mike Leone
(Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and freshman Chris Martin
(Darien, Conn./Darien) were both double-winners for
Stonehill. Leone posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, while
Martin clinched the dual match victory with his 6-0, 6-1 win at
fifth singles. Leone also teamed up with sophomore Jonathan
Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) for an 8-6 win at
second doubles, while Martin and sophomore Aaron Bergeron
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) posted an 8-6 victory at third
doubles to clinch a 2-1 Skyhawks advantage following doubles play.
Senior Michael Mashkevich
(Goleta, Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) also picked up a point
for the Skyhawks with a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles.
Senior Andrew Martin
(Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was a double-winner for
Salve Regina, claiming a 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 win at first singles after
combining with classmate Steve Masso (North Scituate,
R.I./Bishop Hendricken) for an 8-2 victory at first
doubles.
Stonehill (4-4, 1-0 NE-10) returns
to Northeast-10 Conference play on Sunday when it visits Le Moyne
College at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks, winners of 15-straight NE-10
regular season matches, returns home on Wednesday, March 31, when
it hosts Merrimack College for a key Conference matchup at Charles
Watt Courts at 3:30 p.m. Salve Regina (2-5) hosts Regis College on
Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
