Stonehill Sweeps Pace to
Run Win Streak to Three
Skyhawks answer two late
inning rallies to claim 10-9 11-inning victory in game one, before
cruising to 11-4 victory in nightcap
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (March
20, 2010) – Stonehill College swept a doubleheader
at Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at
Finnerty Field today. The Skyhawks recorded a wild 10-9 victory in
11 innings in game one, before taking the nightcap, 11-4.
Senior Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H./Bow) was a combined 4-for-7 with a double, home run,
two stolen bases, six runs scored and two RBI to lead Stonehill
this afternoon. Sophomore Rich McHugh (Pembroke,
Mass./Thayer Academy) hit a combined 5-for-9 with two
doubles, five runs scored and four RBI, while junior
Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet)
chipped in with four RBI on the day.

Shepard drove in the deciding run
with a two-out single to left that scored McHugh from second after
he had reached earlier with a one-out single to right. Stonehill
had led the whole way until Pace scored five in the eighth to take
a 7-5 lead. The Skyhawks responded with four in the top of the
ninth to regain the lead, but the Setters forced extra innings with
two in the home half.
Junior Brenden Shepard drove in the winning run and picked
up the win in relief on the mound to lead Stonehill to the
game one victory.

McHugh finished 4-for-6 in the game
with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and two RBI, while
Shepard was 2-for-6 with a stolen base and two RBI. Shepard also
picked up the win (1-0) on the mound, yielding two unearned runs on
three hits and three walks with no strikeouts over 2.2 innings.
Sophomore Michael Von Stein (Trumbull,
Conn./Trumbull) picked up his first save of the season
with a scoreless 11th, working around two walks with a
pair of strikeouts.
Davis hit 2-for-4 with a home run,
three runs scored and two RBI, while sophomore Michael
White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) batted 2-for-4 with a
stolen base and run scored. Senior Shane Franz (Cazenovia,
N.Y./Cazenovia) chipped in with a pair of hits and two
RBI.
Stonehill starter Eric
Haughn (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) went the first seven
innings and allowed just two earned runs on six hits with four
strikeouts and no walks.
Freshman Brandon Martineson
(Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) led Pace by hitting 3-for-5
with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern)
batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while junior Chris
Roemer (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Junior Kyle Henriksen (Bay
Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) took the loss, allowing the one
earned run on four hits with a strikeout and walk in 1.2 innings of
relief. Setters junior Chris Camastro (Lagrangeville,
N.Y./Arlington) started and went the first six innings,
allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with three
strikeouts and no walks.
Stonehill led 5-2 after single runs
in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings, when Pace erupted
for five in the bottom of the eighth. Martineson knotted the score
with a three-run double down the leftfield line. Sophomore
Tyler Hart (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) put the
Setters in front for the first time all day with an RBI single up
the middle, before Roemer gave them a two-run advantage heading
into the ninth with another RBI single up the middle.
The Skyhawks answered with four in
the ninth. White walked and later scored on a wild pitch, before
McHugh put Stonehill back in front with a two-run double down the
leftfield line. Franz added what looked to be an insurance run with
an RBI single through the right side.
Pace rallied again to force extra
innings with two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Spatkowski led off with a single and later scored when Martineson
reached on a throwing error with what should have been the second
out of the inning. Martineson scored the tying run on a ground out
by junior Kenny Wright (Middle Island,
N.Y./Longwood) that should have ended the game. Neither
team scored in the tenth, although Stonehill left a go-ahead run on
third, before the Skyhawks took the lead for good in the
11th.

Stonehill posted a pair of five-run
innings in cruising to an 11-4 win in the nightcap to complete the
doubleheader sweep.
Senior Mitch Davis closed out a great day at the plate by
going 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases and three runs scored
in game two.

Davis paced the offense as he hit
2-for-3 with a double, two steals and three runs scored. McHugh and
senior Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) were
both 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while senior
Thomas Marino (Garden City, N.J./Garden City)
chipped in with a double and four RBI.
Junior Bryan Galligan
(Brockton, Mass./Brockton) picked up the win on the mound
(1-0), allowing four earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts
and no walks over seven innings. Classmate Shane Penzone
(Hudson, Mass./Hudson Catholic) closed the game out with
two hitless innings of shutout relief, walking one.
Martineson had multiple hits again
for Pace, finishing 2-for-4 with a double. Hart was 1-for-4 with
two RBI, while freshman Robert Horn (Stamford,
Conn./Westhill) batted 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sophomore
Ryan McKeown (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek)
chipped in with a pinch-hit home run.
Junior lefthander Michael
Franza (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) took the loss on the
mound, surrendering six earned runs on six hits with three
strikeouts and five walks over 4.2 innings. Pace pitching yielded
ten walks in the second game.
Stonehill jumped on top with a
five-run first. Healey delivered an RBI single to center before
Marino cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double. Shepard drove
him in with a single to right.
Pace closed within 5-3 with a run
in the second and two in the third on a two-run single to
right-center by Hart. Stonehill got a run back in the fourth with
an RBI single by Hackett before breaking the game open with a
five-run sixth. Healey drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a
two-run single to left by McHugh. Marino added another bases-loaded
walk, before Shepard was hit by a pitch with the bases full that
capped the Skyhawks scoring.
McKeown belted his pinch-hit home
run with two out in the seventh to close out the Pace scoring.
Stonehill (5-5, 3-0 NE-10) is back
in action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader at Assumption
College starting at 1 p.m. Game one is a makeup of a game rained
out in Florida last week, while game two will be Tuesday's
regularly scheduled matchup at Lou Gorman Field in Easton, Mass.,
which will no longer be played at home. The Skyhawks home opener is
now Wednesday with a non-conference clash with Merrimack College at
3:30 p.m. Pace (4-9, 0-4 NE-10) hosts Dominican College for a
non-conference doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
