WORCESTER, Mass. (March 21,
2010) – Stonehill College ran its winning streak to
five games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Assumption
College, ranked third in this week's National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Regional
poll, at H.L. Rocheleau Field this afternoon. The Skyhawks posted a
4-2 victory in game one, before scoring three runs in the top of
the ninth inning to rally for a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Senior Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H./Bow) led the Stonehill offense as he hit 3-for-8 with
three RBI, while junior Scott Hackett (Bangor,
Maine/Bangor) was 3-for-10 with three RBI and a run
scored. Sophomore Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer
Academy) was a combined 3-for-6 with a run scored for the
Skyhawks.
Stonehill also got strong pitching
performances on the day, including a complete game effort from
sophomore Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon
Regional) to earn the win in game two. Three Skyhawk
pitchers on the day did not yield a walk over 18 innings of work.

Sophomore lefthander Matt
Olsen (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) threw eight strong
innings and RBI singles from White and Davis in the top of the
eighth provided the difference in Stonehill's 4-2 victory in
game one.

Olson earned the win (1-1) on the
mound, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts
and no walks over eight innings. Junior righthander Dan
Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) tossed a scoreless
ninth, yielding one hit to earn his second save of the season.
Davis finished 2-for-4 with an RBI,
while Hackett was 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. White was
1-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI in the eighth and senior Ryan
Healey (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) batted 1-for-4 with an
RBI.
Junior Drew Dombkowski
(Southampton, Mass./Hampshire) led Assumption, hitting
3-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Derek Migrants (Ayer,
Mass./Ayer) and sophomore Trevor Lawson (North
Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) were both 1-for-4 with an RBI,
while freshman Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass./BC
High) batted 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Freshman Matt Metcalf
(Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) suffered the loss in
relief for the Greyhounds, allowing two earned runs on four hits
and a walk over 1.2 innings. Sophomore Frank Flynn
(Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) started and allowed
two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks
over the first six innings.
White gave Stonehill the lead for
good in the eighth with an RBI single to left that scored senior
Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia), who
reached on a walk. Davis added an insurance run with an RBI single
to left.
Stonehill opened the scoring with a
single run in the third when senior Thomas Marino (Garden
City, N.J./Garden City) led off with a single and later
scored on a groundout by Hackett. The Skyhawks doubled their lead
in the fifth when Hackett reached with a two-out single to right,
before scoring on a single to center by Healey. Assumption tied the
game in the home half of the fifth with RBI singles by Lawson and
Migrants.

victory and Stonehill scored three runs in the top of the ninth to
rally for the 5-3 victory in game two. Hackett drove in the
go-ahead runs with a two-run single to left. Davis knotted the
score with a sacrifice fly to rightfield.

Assumption down in order in the bottom of the ninth to finish off
his complete game victory (1-0), allowing three earned runs on
seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Davis finished 1-for-4 with two
RBI, while Hackett was 1-for-5 with two RBI. Healey batted 2-for-4,
while McHugh hit 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore
Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Coyle &
Cassidy) chipped in by going 2-for-4 with a stolen base,
run scored and RBI.
Migrants and Flynn were both
2-for-4 with a run scored for Assumption, with Flynn chipping in
with a double. Dombkowski batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Senior Tim Dupuis (West
Suffield, Conn./Suffield) blew a save chance to take the
loss on the mound, allowing three earned runs on two hits and two
walks with two strikeouts in an inning of work. Sophomore
Joe Piscitelli (Oxford, Mass./Oxford) started for
the Greyhounds and allowed two earned runs on six hits with two
strikeouts and a walk over the first six innings.
Assumption took an early lead with
a single run in the first. Migrants singled to leftfield and later
scored on a two-out RBI single to left by junior Mike Foley
(Worcester, Mass./Saint John's). Stonehill evened
the score in the third with an RBI single to right by Davis, before
taking the lead in the fourth on an RBI single to left by
Magnussen.
Assumption regained the lead with a
two-run seventh, sparked by back-to-back doubles by Flynn and
Dombkowski to tie the game. Senior Matthew Jose (Warwick,
R.I./Bishop Hendricken) put the Greyhounds back in front
with a sacrifice fly to left.
Stonehill (7-5, 3-0 NE-10) is back
in action on Wednesday for a non-conference clash with Merrimack
College at Lou Gorman Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:30
p.m. Assumption (10-8, 2-2 NE-10) hosts Merrimack on Thursday for a
non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
