Catawba Edges Stonehill, 5-4
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 8,
2010) - Catawba College edged Stonehill College, 5-4, in a
non-conference men's tennis matchup as the Skyhawks opened their
spring break trip this evening.
Junior Tom McCormack
(Winchester, England) and sophomore Thomas
Mitchell (Nanaimo, British Columbia/Pendleton School) were
both double-winners to lead Catawba to the victory. McCormack
posted a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory at No. 4 singles after combining
with sophomore Uri Yarkoni (Kelowna, British
Columbia/Okanagan) for an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles.
Mitchell picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles after teaming up
with freshman Alex MacDonald (Lowen Hutt, New
Zealand) to win 8-5 at first doubles.
Sophomore Aaron Bergeron
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was the lone double-winner for
Stonehill, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles after teaming up
with freshman Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien)
for an 8-5 win at third doubles.
The Skyhawks won the top two
singles flights to give them a chance at a comeback after dropping
two of three doubles matches. Junior Tim Fayed
(Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), the reigning NE-10
Player of the Year, won at first singles, while senior
Michael Mashkevich (Golata, Calif./Framingham
(Mass.)) posted a win at second singles.
Stonehill (2-3, 1-0 NE-10) is back
in action tomorrow with an in-region battle with Chestnut Hill
College at 12:30 p.m.
