Southern N.H. Posts Key
Win Over Stonehill, 6-3
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 1,
2010) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked
fourth in this week's ITA Division II East Regional rankings,
snapped Stonehill College's streak of 18-straight regular
season wins against Northeast-10 Conference opponents with a 6-3
decision in a key women's tennis matchup this afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire built off a
2-1 advantage following doubles play by winning each of the top
three singles flights to clinch its sixth-straight win. Junior
Amber Chandronnait (Bow, N.H./Bow) and freshman
Alena Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn./Kingswood
Oxford) led the double-winners for Southern New Hampshire
as the East region's third-ranked doubles team combined for
an 8-2 win over Stonehill's top doubles pairing of senior
Samantha Dircks (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville)
and freshman Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.Y./Holy
Spirit), the region's eighth-ranked doubles team.
Chandronnait, the top-ranked
singles player in the region, didn't drop a game in posting a
straight-sets win at first singles, while Mukdaprakorn recorded a
6-2, 6-2 win at second singles. Junior Catalina Echeverry
(Cali, Columbia) was also a double-winner for the Penmen,
registering a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles after combining with
senior Alison Waring (Westboro, Mass./Framingham)
for an 8-5 win at second doubles.
Sophomore Sarah Hickey
(Lee, Mass./Lee) kept her perfect collegiate record intact
when Waring retired while behind 6-2, 1-0 to the Stonehill number
4, who ran her collegiate singles record to 27-0, including an 11-0
clip in NE-10 play. Frost also picked up a point for the Skyhawks,
rallying for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 win at fifth singles to improve to
8-0 in singles play in her first collegiate season, 6-0 in the
NE-10.
Stonehill's freshman doubles
tandem of Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and
Jacqueline Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North
Reading) also picked up a point for the Skyhawks with an
8-2 victory at third doubles.
The loss is Stonehill's first
in a regular season NE-10 dual match since falling to Saint
Michael's College (5-4) in the regular season finale on April
20, 2008.
Stonehill (9-2, 6-1 NE-10) returns
to action next Wednesday, April 7, when it hosts rival Bentley
University at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Southern New
Hampshire (7-1, 4-0 NE-10) hosts The College of Saint Rose tomorrow
