Over Assumption
Skyhawks ride strong starts
from Haughn and White to key NE-10 sweep
Stonehill wins game one, 2-1 in ten innings, take game two,
6-1
EASTON, Mass. (April 10,
2010) – Stonehill College used strong pitching to
post a doubleheader sweep over Assumption College in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Lou Gorman Field this afternoon. The
Skyhawks took game onen, 2-1 in ten innings, before posting a 6-1
win in the nightcap.
Sophomore lefthanders Eric
Haughn (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) and Michael
White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) turned in two strong
starting pitching performances to lead the way for Stonehill, while
sophomore lefthander Michael Von Stein (Trumbull,
Conn./Trumbull) pitched two scoreless innings of relief of
his own.
Junior Scott Hackett
(Bangor, Maine/Bangor) paced the offense for Stonehill,
hitting a combined 4-for-8 with a double and two RBI, driving in
the winning run with a walk off double in the tenth inning of game
one. Senior Matt Skane (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee)
batted a combined 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Senior Derek Migrants
(Ayer, Mass./Ayer) hit a combined 4-for-8 with a stolen
base and two RBI to pace Assumption.

Scott Hackett drilled a double to
the wall with one out in the bottom of the tenth to score senior
Rob Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) from
second with the winning run and lift Stonehill to the 2-1 win in
game one. Von Stein led off the inning with a walk and advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H./Bow).

Rob Von Stein earned the win (2-1)
in relief, working around a walk in two scoreless and hitless
innings with a strikeout. He retired the side in order in the top
of the tenth leading up to the decisive half inning. Eric Haughn
allowed just a first inning run on five hits with six strikeouts
and three walks over eight innings for Stonehill.
Hackett finished 2-for-5 with the
double and RBI, while Rob Von Stein hit 1-for-3 with a double and
run scored. Matt Skane batted 1-for-3 with an RBI, while junior
Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) batted
1-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
Derek Migrants hit 2-for-4 with a
stolen base and RBI. Junior Blake Youngblood (East
Freetown, Mass./New Bedford) was 2-for-3 with a pair of
walks, a stolen base and run scored.
Junior Dan Evangelista
(Shelton, Conn./Fairfield Prep) took the loss (3-1) for
Assumption, allowing the one earned run on a hit and a walk with
one strikeout over an inning and a third. Senior Michael
Colebrook (Leicester, Mass./Saint John's) went the
first eight innings for the Greyhounds, allowing an earned run on
five hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks.
Assumption got its lone run in the
top of the first inning as Youngblood led off with a walk, advanced
to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a single down the
leftfield line by Migrants, who was out on the play trying to
stretch out a double.
Stonehill knotted the score in the
fourth when Bruno drew a one out walk, stole second and scored on a
single to center by Skane.

Michael White threw a complete game
and freshman James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor,
N.Y./Briarcliff) drove in three runs to lead Stonehill to
a 6-1 win in game two and complete the doubleheader sweep.
White allowed just the one earned
run on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks over the
nine innings to pick up the win (3-0) on the mound for Stonehill.
He never allowed more than one hit in any inning and allowed only
two runners into scoring position, none past second base, after the
first inning.
Freshman James DeAlto drove in thre runs, belting his first
collegiate home run, in game two.

DeAlto hit 2-for-4 with a home run,
two runs scored and three RBI for Stonehill, while Scott Hackett
was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Matt Skane batted 2-for-2, while sophomore
Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Coyle &
Cassidy) finished 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and
RBI.
Derek Migrants again led Assumption
by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Joe Piscitelli
(Oxford, Mass./Oxford) took the loss (0-3) on the mound
for the Greyhounds, surrendering three runs, two earned, on nine
hits with a strikeout and no walks over six-plus innings.
Assumption again opened the scoring
with its lone run coming in its first at bat. Blake Youngblood drew
a leadoff walk, stole second, and then scored on a single to left
by Migrants.
Stonehill evened the score in the
fifth as DeAlto, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on
a single from Hackett. The Skyhawks took the lead in the sixth on
an RBI double from Magnussen. Their lead stretched to 3-1 in the
seventh as junior Brenden Shepard (Boxford,
Mass./Masconomet) led off with a single and later scored
on a sacrifice fly to center by Mitch Davis.
Stonehill broke the game open with
three in the eighth, all off the bat of DeAlto who smacked his
first collegiate home run.
Stonehill (13-11, 8-4 NE-10)
returns to action tomorrow when it visits the University of
Massachusetts Lowell at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on
Wednesday, when they host the River Hawks at Gorman Field at 3:30
p.m. Assumption (17-12, 5-6 NE-10) hosts Pace University for a
Northeast-10 doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
