Fayed and Martin lead Skyhawks back from 2-1 deficit after doubles play
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 14, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to pick up a 5-4 victory over Saint Ambrose University in non-conference men's tennis action at Lake Cane Tennis Center today.
Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) led the way for Stonehill as double-winners. The pair combined for the Skyhawks lone doubles victory with an 8-1 decision at first doubles. Fayed, ranked 13th individually in the East Region, cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Saint Ambrose sophomore Santiago Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) at first singles. Martin added a 6-1, 6-3 win over junior Michael Harts (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) at third singles.
Stonehill won four of the six singles matches to erase the doubles deficit. Also winning singles matches were junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 4 and freshman Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) posting a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 5.
Junior Barney O'Donnell (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) was a double-winner for Saint Ambrose, posting a 6-0, 6-4 win at second singles after combining with Harts for an 8-3 decision at second doubles.
Stonehill (5-2, 1-1 NE-10) has a day off on Tuesday before returning to action on Wednesday against Tiffin University at Star Island Resort, in Kissimmee, Fla., at 11:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next schedule home game is Saturday, March 26, when it hosts Saint Michael's College at noon.
