MIAMI Gardens, Fla. (March 4, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team was tripped up by St. Thomas University's offense in a 11-0 opening spring break game Saturday afternoon at Paul Demie Mainieri Field in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Stonehill's (1-5) Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford), Chhany Minton (Brookline, Massachusetts/Brookline), Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton), Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's), Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham), Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy), and Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) each recorded a hit for the Skyhawks.

St. Thomas' (13-6) Erne Valdes struck out 10 in seven innings pitched, while Devon Stubbings closed the game giving up only two hits in two innings pitched. Gutierrez led the Bobcats batting 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, one double, and two runs across the plate. Michael Centeno and and Daniel Lowry each tallied two RBI as they batted 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Monte was able to connect in the top of the first for the Skyhawks' first hit of the game, singling to center field. But with two outs, Stonehill wasn't able to get the run across. The Bobcats mimicked the Skyhawks getting their first hit out of the way by Gutierrez, as he singled to left field, but Aran Hamilton-Grenham (Woburn, Massachusetts/Buckingham Browne and Nichols) closed out the inning getting St. Thomas to fly out to right field.

Stonehill went down three-straight batters in the top of the third inning, as St. Thomas was able to string together one hit and recorded two runs for an early 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats connected in the bottom of the fifth inning once again, as Lowry and Michael Sanchez sat in scoring position on second and third with one out for Centeno to launch a double, scoring the two, 4-0.

The sixth inning was just as productive for St. Thomas, as five runs scooted across the plate. Lowry connected on a pitch singling to center field scoring James Spatafora and Randy Oliva. Gutierrez also singled driving Lowry home and later scored on an error. Palenzuela came up to the dish with two outs ripping a single advancing Centeno home for a 9-0 lead.

St. Thomas was able to get five more hits in the seventh and eighth innings to score one run each innings for an 11-0 victory.

The Skyhawks (1-4) take on Felician College tomorrow afternoon at Paul Demie Mainieri Field for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
