Duffy/Simmons reach Round of 16 in doubles championship.
FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 21, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's tennis program competed at the 2021 United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional Championships, hosted by the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open, over the weekend.
Stonehill's doubles pairing of juniors Christian Duffy and Ben Simmons reached the Round of 16 in the Doubles Championship to highlight the Skyhawks trip to the event. They opened with an 8-5 victory over the Daemen College pairing of juniors Luis DeVuyst and Zachary LaPlante in the first round.
Duffy and Simmons were then topped in the Round of 16 by a University of the Sciences pairing of juniors Oscar Serra and Jack Kosiorowski that knocked off the overall top seed in the opening round. Serra and Kosiorowski posted an 8-1 win over Duffy in Simmons in their match.
Stonehill freshman Guillaume Duhil de Bénazé won the first set of his opening round match of the Singles Championship with Saint Thomas Aquinas College junior Max Kendler, before falling in a third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. Stonehill fifth-year Trent Newman and junior Luke Nickerson both drew seeded players in their first round matches. Newman was defeated by University of District of Columbia senior Zicheng Zeng, who would go on to reach the semifinal round as the No. 9 seed.
Duhil de Bénazé and sophomore Louis Coppi drew No. 2 seed Tom Jarry and Ethan Miller of Le Moyne College in the first round of the Doubles Championship, falling to the eventual championship runners up.
