Franz's eighth-inning
homer lifts Skyhawks past rival Falcons

SAINT LEO, Fla. (March 10,
2010) – Senior Shane Franz (Cazenovia,
N.Y./Cazenovia) belted a two-run home run in the bottom of
the eighth inning to lift Stonehill College to a 7-6 victory over
rival Bentley University in non-conference baseball action at
Southard Stadium on the campus of Saint Leo University today.
Franz's two-run blast down
the right field line capped a 3-for-3 afternoon to lead Stonehill,
adding three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Ryan Healey
(Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) was 2-for-4 with a double and
run scored, while classmate Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H./Bow) finished 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Junior Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet)
batted 2-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored. Classmate
Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) chipped in by
going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Sophomore Michael Von Stein
(Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) picked up the win (1-0) with
4.1 innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits. Sophomore
lefthander Matt Olsen (Winchester,
Mass./Winchester) went the first 4.2 innings and allowed
six runs, three earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and three
walks.
Sophomore Vinnie Eruzione
(Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) led Bentley as he hit 3-for-4
with a triple, run scored and three RBI. Senior Charlie
Pagliarulo (Medford, Mass./Medford) was also 3-for-4,
adding a triple, RBI and three runs scored. Junior James
Roche (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) chipped in by going
1-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Junior Brian Jasiak
(Newburyport, Mass./St. John's Prep) took the loss
for Bentley, surrendering the two earned runs and three hits in two
relief innings. Junior Rob Finneran (Garden City,
N.Y./Garden City) started for the Falcons and went the
first five innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits
with four strikeouts and a walk.
Healey led off the bottom of the
eighth with a single to left before Franz homered down the
leftfield line. Von Stein retired the Falcons in order in the ninth
to clinch the victory.
Bentley struck for two quick runs
in the top of the first as Pagliarulo led off with a triple and
scored on a single through the left side by Eruzione. Junior
Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken)
drove in Eruzione with a one-out single through the left side.
Stonehill answered with three in the home half when Davis led off
with a double, followed by an inside the park home run to left by
Hackett. Healey reached with a one-out double, reaching third on an
error. Franz drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center.
Bentley knotted the score in the
third without benefit of a hit as Pagliarulo led off with a walk
and later scored on a sac fly by Roche. The Falcons regained the
lead with a three-run fourth, keyed by a two-run triple by
Eruzione.
Stonehill closed back within one
with a pair in the home half of the fourth. Sophomore
Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Coyle &
Cassidy) drew a bases loaded walk, before junior
Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central)
added a sac fly. The game was then scoreless until the Skyhawks
eighth inning heroics.
Stonehill (2-4, 0-0 NE-10) is back
in action tomorrow with a pair of non-conference matchups with
Northeast-10 Conference members at Alfond Stadium on the campus of
Rollins College. The Skyhawks will face Bentley (4-10, 0-0 NE-10)
at noon, before playing American International College at
approximately 2:30 p.m.
