Skyhawks hold off Purple
Knights rally for 8-6 win in game one
Olsen and Wright combine for shutout in 11-0 victory in game
two
BURLINGTON, Vt. (April 21,
2010) – Stonehill College swept a doubleheader
against Saint Michael's College in a non-conference baseball
doubleheader at Centennial Field this evening. The Skyhawks held
off a late Purple Knights rally to post an 8-6 victory in game one,
before rolling to an 11-0 decision in game two.
Junior Scott Hackett
(Bangor, Maine/Bangor) led the Stonehill offense as he hit
a combined 4-for-8 with a double, triple, two runs scored and two
RBI over the two seven inning games. Sophomore Michael
White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) drove in four runs
over the two games.
Senior Tony Bonvechio
(Newport, Vt./North County Union) reached base four times
to lead Saint Michael's, finishing 2-for-4 for the afternoon
with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI. Classmate Jeff
McLaughlin (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) was a combined 2-for-6
with an RBI and two runs scored.

Stonehill withstood a late Saint
Michael's rally for an 8-6 win in game one of the
doubleheader, stranding the tying run on base in the bottom of the
seventh.
Sophomore Michael White was 2-for-3 with a double, stolen
base and two RBI in the game one win.

Senior Ryan Healey (Lynn,
Mass./Lynn English) paced Stonehill's 12-hit attack
as he hit 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an
RBI. Sophomore Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon
Regional) batted 2-for-3 with a double, stolen base, two
RBI and a run scored, while Scott Hackett was 2-for-4 with a
double, triple, RBI and run scored. Senior Mitch Davis
(Bow, N.H./Bow) chipped in with two doubles as well.
Junior righthander Dan
Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) picked up the win
(1-1) on the mound for the Skyhawks, allowing four runs, three
earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk over five
innings. Sophomore lefthander Eric Haughn (Pembroke,
Mass./Pembroke) picked up his first save of the season by
retiring the only batter he faced to end the Saint Michael's
threat in the seventh.
Tony Bonvechio led Saint
Michael's at the plate as he hit 2-for-3 with two doubles, a
run scored and two RBI. Senior Matt Beaulieu (Littleton,
Mass./Lawrence Academy) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base,
run scored and RBI, while Jeff McLaughlin finished 2-for-3 with two
runs scored and an RBI.
Senior righthander Mike
Robert (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) took the loss (1-5),
allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and a
walk over 5.2 innings.
Stonehill opened the scoring with a
four-run second inning behind three doubles in the frame. Senior
Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) ripped a
two-run double and then scored on a double from White. He then
stole third and scored on a single from senior Rob Von
Stein (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull). The Skyhawks extended
their lead with two more runs in the third on an RBI single from
junior Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and
an RBI double by Healey.
Saint Michael's got back in
the game with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by
McLaughlin before scoring three times in the fifth. Beaulieu had an
RBI single and Bonvechio delivered a two-run double.
Hackett had an RBI double for
Stonehill in the sixth to run Stonehill's lead to 8-4. Saint
Michael's closed within two on the bottom of the seventh, but
Haughn came on and got a pop out to first to escape the jam.

Olsen (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and classmate
Brendan Wright (Easton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman)
combined to throw a six-hit shutout as Stonehill earned the sweep
with an 11-0 win in game two.

Olsen picked up the win (2-2) in
his return to the mound following an injury as he scattered five
hits over his five scoreless innings with four strikeouts and a
walk. Wright yielded just a hit and a walk over two scoreless
innings with five strikeouts.
Freshman James DeAlto
(Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) paced the Stonehill
offense as he hit 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Classmate Michael Zeiner (Simsbury,
Conn./Simsbury) was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs
scored and two RBI, while sophomore Rich McHugh (Pembroke,
Mass./Thayer Academy) batted 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI
and two runs scored. Scott Hackett finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and
run scored.
Sophomore Chad Estey (New
Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) led Saint Michael's,
hitting 2-for-2. Classmate Ben Mitchell (Pembroke,
N.H./Pembroke Academy) batted 2-for-3.
Stonehill took quick control of the
game, staking out a 6-0 lead after three innings. The Skyhawks
scored three in the top of the first on a two-run single by Michael
White, with Angelo Bruno also scoring on an error on the play.
Mitch Davis had an RBI single in the second and then the Skyhawks
got a two-run single from DeAlto in the third.
Stonehill broke the game open with
five runs over the final three innings. Zeiner belted his first
collegiate home run, with a two-run shot, in the fifth. McHugh
tripled and scored on a groundout in the sixth and then Hackett had
an RBI single and McHugh drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh.
Stonehill (18-15, 11-8 NE-10) is
right back in action tonight as it continues its seven game road
trip with a key Northeast-10 battle at 30th-ranked
Franklin Pierce University at 6 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next
Wednesday, April 28, to host Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m.
Saint Michael's (5-22-1) hosts Norwich University on Thursday
at 3 p.m.
