When Bob Hegarty played baseball and basketballfor Stonehill College, little did he know he’d be coming backto Stonehill as a basketball coach. Bob captained baseball hisjunior and senior years and was named Stonehill Athlete of the Yearin 1958. Bob batted a career .444 in four years of baseball, arecord which still stands. As a basketball player, Bob scored 38points in a game during the 1958 season, which was a single-gamerecord at the time. He was named to the New England CollegeAll-Star Team as a senior. Three years after graduation in 1958,Bob returned to Stonehill to coach basketball (1961-74). He was anassistant to Jim Dougher on the 1970-71 men’s team,Stonehill’s first NCAA qualifier.

Bob served Stonehill as a freshmancoach and his teams had an 80 percent winning percentage. In 1968,he was selected New England Freshman Coach of the Year by theofficials. Bob is a social studies teacher at Archbishop WilliamsHigh School in Braintree. He lives in Easton and in the summercoaches the Bridgewater Cardinals in the Cranberry Baseball League.Prior to that, Bob coached American Legion baseball in Easton. Bobhas also coached the Brockton Invitational Tryout Camp during pastsummers. He married the late Louise Hegarty, a popular Stonehillprofessor.
